Former US President Trump confirmed on Tuesday (September 17th) that he had received a phone call from Vice President Harris. This came two days after a thwarted second assassination attempt against Trump by the Secret Service.
On Monday, President Biden called Trump and discussed security details. Trump described the call as “very friendly,” and the White House noted that the conversation was “very cordial.”
When talking about the conversation with Harris, Trump used the same description, stating that he appreciated Harris’ actions.
“I received a very friendly phone call from Kamala Harris. The conversation was very friendly,” Trump said during a town hall meeting in Michigan.
“We are grateful for that, but we must take back our country. We must win. We will win, we will make America great again,” Trump added.
This attack occurred less than two months after Trump was injured at a rally in Pennsylvania. In fundraising emails, he encouraged supporters to “not be afraid.” Speaking in an interview on social media on Sunday, Trump recounted the events, saying he was playing golf with friends when he suddenly heard “about four to five shots.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Harris expressed condemnation of political violence during the call and expressed relief that Trump was unharmed.
According to reports from The Hill, Harris stated during a discussion with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) on Tuesday, “I asked him if he was unharmed. I told him—and I’ve said this publicly—our country doesn’t tolerate political violence.”
“I ran for this election and campaign for many reasons, including fighting for our democracy, and in a democratic country, political violence is not allowed,” she added.
Two days ago, a man named Ryan Wesley Routh lurked outside a golf course in Florida for nearly 12 hours, preparing to target Trump with a gun. The man has since been arrested and charged.
It is not yet known how the gunman Routh obtained information about Trump’s whereabouts.
According to Reuters, Routh supported Trump during the 2016 election but later switched to support the Democratic Party, particularly the faction of radical Democrats.
Routh had previously responded on his social media page to anti-Trump comments by Biden and Harris, stating that “democracy is written on the ballot, we cannot lose.” He frequently posts about politics and only donates to Democratic candidates.
Trump’s running mate, Senator Vance, stated on Monday that he plans to reduce the use of attacking language in his campaign and hopes for the same from the Democratic Party.
