Former TVB actress Myolie Wu, who shifted her focus to the mainland China entertainment industry years ago, recently revealed on a Chinese variety show “Sending A Hundred Girls Home” that she is facing challenges as an actress. She admitted, “I no longer have the opportunity to play the leading roles.”
At 45 years old, Myolie Wu debuted as the third runner-up in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant in 1999. As both an actress and singer, she has appeared in nearly a hundred film and television productions since then, establishing herself as one of the leading actresses at TVB in the 2010s. In 2011, she won the TVB Anniversary Award for “My Favorite TV Female Character” for her role in “Curse of the Royal Harem”.
With her exceptional acting skills, Myolie Wu transitioned her career to mainland China in 2012, starring in dramas such as “The Years You Were Late”, “Never Dance Alone”, “Dear Life”, and “Lost Flower”. This move earned her a solid position in the Chinese drama industry and garnered praise from Chinese netizens for her success.
Despite her achievements, during her interview on “Sending A Hundred Girls Home”, Myolie Wu disclosed that the reality of accepting acting gigs is not as glamorous as perceived by the public. She expressed that she no longer has the opportunity to play leading female roles, describing the situation as “difficult”.
Even though she may not have the chance to play lead roles anymore, Myolie Wu consoles herself by saying that she doesn’t necessarily need to play the protagonist. She mentioned that she has portrayed many dull supporting roles in the past and would prefer to take on more interesting characters, even if it means playing a secondary or tertiary role. Myolie Wu finds acting to be an exciting profession, as it allows her to embody various roles at different stages of life, considering herself fortunate for the opportunities she has had.
Married to non-entertainment industry husband Philip Lee since 2015, Myolie Wu has three children in four years. Despite being a well-known workaholic, she has continued to film and attend events while pregnant, and has even brought her children to China for several months for filming projects.
Recently, Myolie Wu and singer Kelly Chen appeared together at a brand event in Hong Kong. When asked about her husband’s desire for another daughter, she jokingly responded, “If we have another son, that would be a big deal.” She expressed concerns about having another son, indicating that the chances of having more children are slim at her age. However, she left the possibility open, stating that unless it’s unexpected, she is not dwelling too much on it and would see it as a blessing from above.
