Actor Wang Dalu appears in Taipei Main Station to serve a one-year military service in Songshan

Taiwanese celebrity Wang Dailu, known on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, is suspected of involvement in military service evasion, and today (March 13) he showed up at Taipei Main Station to report. He will be heading to Sun Moon Lake in Taichung to enlist for training and be assigned to an alternative military service unit.

33-year-old Wang Dailu is a student at the Dayeh University of Science and Technology and Management. In 2015, he transferred from the Department of Communication Studies to the Department of Performing Arts. He rose to fame in 2015 for his role as the male lead “Xu Taiyu” in the movie “Our Times.” Wang Dailu is accused of paying 1 million New Taiwan Dollars to evade military service, violating the Military Service Act and the Criminal Code for forgery of documents. He was granted bail of 150,000 NTD.

Subsequently, Wang Dailu was found to have arrived back in Taiwan in April 2024 and faced allegations of complaining to a friend with the surname You that the car sent to pick him up at the airport via Uber was too shabby and the driver’s attitude was poor. You then allegedly arranged for someone to assault the driver. Prosecutors recently instructed the police to search and bring back Wang Dailu and two others for investigation on charges of attempted murder. The New Taipei District Court ruled for Wang Dailu to post bail of 5 million NTD.

The conscription office in Taipei stated that Wang Dailu received a call-up order for the alternative military service cohort on March 13. If he does not fulfill the requirements for deferred conscription due to his case or delayed conscription, he should report for service at the time and place specified in the call-up order.

Today, Wang Dailu enlisted in the army, belonging to the “General Alternative Military Service Cohort 263,” and as required to serve for one year. He arrived at Taipei Main Station five minutes before the reporting time in the morning. When he appeared, he was quickly surrounded by the media present, mostly lowering his head and dodging questions without speaking. Wang Dailu will head to Sun Moon Lake in Taichung for training and then be assigned to an alternative military service unit for duty.

Wang Dailu’s involvement in evading military service and being embroiled in a case of alleged “attempted murder” in Taiwan has made headlines in China, sparking public backlash. According to Chinese media reports, if Wang Dailu is officially regarded as a “problematic artist” by the Chinese authorities, he could face a complete ban in China. Currently, he has five unreleased works, including movies such as “Unforgivable” and “Happy Belly,” as well as TV dramas like “Creed,” “The Jessie,” and “Living Quietly in a Troubled World,” which may be at risk of not being screened.
