A sinkhole in a highway in Baise, Guangxi, with a crack 30 meters long and 2 meters deep.

On the evening of October 7th, a section of the G80 Guangzhou to Kunming Expressway in Baise to Yangwei experienced road cracking and sinking, with a crack approximately 30 meters long appearing. Subsequently, the retaining wall on the expressway collapsed, causing the road surface to cave in, with the maximum depth exceeding 2 meters.

According to a report by CCTV News, around 7:30 pm on the same day, a retaining wall on a slope on the G80 Guangzhou to Kunming Expressway towards Yangwei shifted, resulting in a crack about 30 meters long on the road surface and noticeable sinking, posing a risk to traffic safety.

As of 11:00 pm on October 7th, the retaining wall on the expressway collapsed, leading to a significant road collapse with a maximum depth exceeding 2 meters. Traffic on the G80 Guangzhou to Kunming Expressway towards Yangwei and the G69 Yinbai Expressway towards Yangwei was closed.

Official reports attributed the cause of the accident to “continuous heavy rainfall in the western Guangxi region leading to a rapid rise in the water level of the Baoai River, causing the area near the expressway slope retaining wall to be soaked by the river water, resulting in soft soil.” However, some netizens are skeptical, questioning whether the expressway itself was built with substandard construction.

“I am an Old Leek”: Why do such malignant incidents keep happening? From the preliminary exploration, design, construction, to monitoring, which link had problems that must be identified and held accountable!

“I Pull Money”: The river water surged? The areas around the expressway were not affected, so why did the road on the expressway collapse?

“xyzfc72”: There are issues with the drainage of the expressway retaining wall and slope.

“Attitude Netizen 05gxRB”: Didn’t the last expressway collapse happen in Guangdong?

The incident has raised concerns among the public about the quality of infrastructure construction and maintenance in the country. It highlights the importance of thorough inspections, robust design, precise construction, and continuous monitoring to ensure the safety and stability of critical transportation routes. The authorities are urged to investigate the root causes of such failures and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, reassuring the public about the reliability of the country’s infrastructure projects.
