Following the controversy triggered by the absurd plot of “Kirin Giving Birth to 99 Sons, Heaven Bestows Happiness” where a woman gave birth to 99 sons in one birth, another short drama, “Forcing Koi Carp to Marry Yanwang, Mansion’s Luck Completely Broken,” has recently sparked outrage for its storyline that the female lead marries at 7 years old and gives birth at 15 years old. The drama has since been removed from the platform.
According to reports from the China Youth Daily, the drama tells the story of a 7-year-old female lead who marries into a general’s mansion to replace her sister, giving birth at the age of 15. The actress portraying the female lead, Liu Xingchen, is only 11 years old, an underage minor, and is paired with the 28-year-old adult actor Jin Wang to play husband and wife. Throughout the drama, there are scenes of affection between the male and female leads, such as hugging, eye contact, and holding hands, with adult-like metaphors of “growing up” and “consummating the marriage.”
On January 13th, shortly after the drama was released, it immediately sparked ethical controversies. Netizens criticized the drama for promoting pedophilia, lacking boundaries and calling for strict controls and removal.
“This drama is indeed too much, letting a minor act in love scenes with an adult.” “How could they let children act in such scenes?” “Getting married at seven is outrageous!” “Who is the director? Who is the screenwriter?” “Where are the censors? No bottom line.” “Destroying moral values, how can such vulgar and borderline content still be aired? Please carefully review and block these improper influences!” “It must be taken down and strictly examined.”
On January 14th, the topic of “Outrage Over 7-Year-Old Marrying, 15-Year-Old Giving Birth Short Drama” trended on Weibo. Currently, the drama cannot be found on mainland platforms, displaying as “removed.”
Ironically, just on January 8th, the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television of China issued guidelines for managing micro-short dramas related to children, emphasizing that the plot should align with minors’ understanding and purity. However, despite the new regulations, the drama easily passed inspection and was aired, raising public doubts about the approval mechanism.
In response, platform customer service only mentioned that they would enhance the inspection process, without specifying the detailed inspection system.
