On November 30th, Chen Weijun, a member of the Party Committee and Executive Vice Chairman of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was officially announced to have been placed under investigation.
According to the website of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission, Chen Weijun, a member of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Executive Vice Chairman of the Autonomous Region Government, is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law, and is currently undergoing review and supervision investigation.
Chen Weijun, a Han Chinese born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in June 1966, started working in August 1986 and joined the Communist Party of China in June 1985.
Chen Weijun has previously held various positions in Zhejiang Province, including Mayor of Huzhou City, Secretary of the Huzhou Municipal Committee, Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province since January 2018, Secretary of the Wenzhou Municipal Committee since May 2018, member of the Standing Committee of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of the Wenzhou Municipal Committee since July 2019. In May 2021, Chen Weijun was appointed a member of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and the following month was appointed as the Executive Vice Chairman of the Autonomous Region Government and Deputy Secretary of the Party Group, later also serving as the Director of the Financial Office of the Regional Party Committee, and the Director of the Integration Office of Military-Civilian Affairs and the National Development Office of the Regional Party Committee.
This move comes as part of the continuous anti-corruption campaign led by the Chinese government to maintain party discipline and fight against corruption at all levels of governance. The investigation into Chen Weijun’s alleged misconduct highlights the ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and integrity within the Communist Party’s ranks, particularly in senior leadership positions.
