A family in California, USA, discovered a copy of the first issue of the “Superman” comic book from 1939 while sorting through their deceased relative’s belongings. This rare comic book recently fetched a staggering price of 9.12 million US dollars at an auction, setting a new record in comic book auction history.
According to reports from the Associated Press, Heritage Auctions in Texas, USA, sold the first issue of “Superman” comic book for 9.12 million US dollars on November 20, breaking the previous record of 6 million US dollars.
The previous record was set in 2024 by the same auction house with the sale of the first issue of “Action Comics,” which introduced Superman to the world.
The auction house stated that a family in Northern California found this groundbreaking first edition of “Superman” comic book in their attic last year while going through their late mother’s belongings.
The comic book was found in a box along with some old newspapers. It was authenticated by the largest third-party comic book grading service, CGC, and received a grade of 9.0 out of 10, making it the highest-known graded first issue of “Superman” comic book in existence.
Lon Allen, the Vice President of the auction house, said in a press release, “The first issue of ‘Superman’ is a milestone in popular culture history. Not only is this comic book in unprecedented condition, but it also has a story behind it akin to a movie. I am pleased to see the selling price reflects this, and it is an honor for Heritage to auction this iconic comic book.”
Jim Halperin, one of the founders of the auction house, mentioned that this auction “will one day be seen as an early stage in the journey of pop culture collectibles into the realm of high-end auctions.”
