In the race to attract customers, the price war in the American fast food industry is heating up. First, fast food giant McDonald’s announced plans to launch a $5 value meal in June, followed by Wendy’s introducing a $3 breakfast combo to compete.
McDonald’s is set to kick off a month-long promotion of their $5 value meal starting on June 25, as reported by CNBC. The meal includes a McChicken or a Double Cheeseburger, four-piece Chicken McNuggets, medium fries, and a medium soft drink.
“Restaurant Business” speculates that McDonald’s value meal, as restaurants strive to lure in customers, could intensify the fast food industry price war this summer.
McDonald’s first-quarter earnings report showed slightly lower performance than expected in the United States. With rising prices and interest rates, consumers are cutting back on spending.
Additionally, according to USA Today, McDonald’s introduced a new McFlurry drink called the “McSwirl” nationwide on Tuesday, May 21. It is made with syrup and chopped candy pieces, giving it a nostalgic flavor reminiscent of childhood candies.
In a move to attract customers, the fast food giant will be giving away six-piece Chicken McNuggets for free on Wednesday, May 22 through their mobile app.
As expected, Wendy’s announced on Monday, May 20, the launch of a $3 breakfast combo, including seasoned potatoes and a choice of bacon, egg, and cheese English muffin or sausage, egg, and cheese English muffin.
Wendy’s also disclosed plans to add sausage breakfast wraps in participating stores as part of the promotion.
According to the press release, this new product was inspired by earlier this year’s launch of bacon breakfast corn cakes, which include a sausage patty, egg, seasoned potatoes, American cheese, and cheese sauce wrapped in corn cakes.
As part of the introduction of the new breakfast wraps, Wendy’s offers DoorDash members $5 off on breakfast orders containing bacon or sausage breakfast wraps when the order reaches $12 or more. The discount is valid from May 31 to June 6 or while supplies last.
