On October 7, three officials in Jiangmen responsible for leadership in health and epidemic prevention – the Deputy Mayor, Director of the Health Bureau, and Director of the Petition Bureau were dismissed from their positions. In recent days, there has been a growing trend of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, which may be related to the dismissal of these officials.
According to the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, from September 28 to October 4, there were a total of 3181 newly confirmed cases of KFD in the province, with Jiangmen alone accounting for 2480 cases, exceeding the previous epidemic core, Foshan (157 cases), by nearly 16 times. Currently, there are still over 200 new confirmed cases daily. Consequently, the Jiangmen municipal government has initiated a Level 3 response to the public health emergency. However, due to the Communist Party’s habit of concealing epidemic information, the actual situation may be more severe.
On October 7, the Standing Committee of the Jiangmen Municipal People’s Congress convened its 36th meeting and decided to relieve Zhou Peishan from the position of Deputy Mayor, Liu Xuewen from the position of Director of the Health Bureau, and Chen Junkai from the position of Director of the Petition Bureau.
Recently, there has been a resurgence of the KFD epidemic in Jiangmen, Guangdong Province. The city government has ordered the “Great Mosquito Eradication” to be the most important “political task” at present, willing to eliminate mosquitoes at all costs. This even led to the cancellation of the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays for all civil servants and personnel in public institutions to participate in mosquito eradication. Reports indicate that the civil servant system is currently under high pressure, while complaints have been raised by the public regarding tree felling and green space clearance in residential areas.
According to a video shared by a netizen in Jiangmen, during the National Day holiday, a “national mosquito eradication campaign” was launched with full participation. The video shows several workers in protective gear spraying mosquito eradication substances on a relatively small area, with an intimidating scene captured by someone filming nearby.
The video uploader bluntly stated that it was not a movie set, but the actual mosquito eradication scene in Jiangmen, describing it as “insane.” Some netizens likened it to a “biological warfare.”
Questioning comments from netizens included, “Are the residents provided with similar protective gear as the workers?” to which another user replied, “Dream on, just lie down and get sprayed.” Some feedback mentioned the discomfort caused by the sprayed chemicals, saying, “My throat hurts.”
Netizens expressed doubts and criticisms like, “Are they crazy?” “Staged?” “I understand clearing stagnant water to prevent mosquito breeding, but removing vegetation on a slope is excessive. What about the risk of landslides?” “Why pour out the water from the fish tank? How will the fish survive? With fish present, there won’t be enough mosquitoes for them to eat.” “Walking with a sprayer in broad daylight, spraying lightly in open areas on both sides of the road constitutes mosquito eradication?” “They are reminded of the time when they caught sparrows.”
