On September 11th, Chinese actor Yu Menglong tragically passed away after falling from a building in Beijing. Despite the official ruling of “accidental fall after drinking”, many doubts and suspicions surrounding the case have sparked widespread public questioning. Yu’s friend, Hua Chenyu, seemingly paid a subtle tribute to him through the stage design of his recent performance.
The shocking incident took place early in the morning at the Yangguang Shangdong Community in Beijing, where Yu Menglong fell to his death. What surprised many was the police’s swift declaration ruling out any criminal suspicion within just 12 hours, attributing it to a “drunken accident fall”. This conclusion quickly stirred up discussions on social media, with many netizens expressing skepticism towards the speedy closure of the case.
Yu Menglong was a contestant in the 2013 season of “Happy Boys Voice” and had built a deep friendship with fellow contestant Hua Chenyu. Hua Chenyu posted a candle emoji on Weibo in the early hours of September 12th, silently expressing his mourning for his friend.
During the Foshan 2025 Bubbles Island Music and Art Festival on September 20th to 21st, Hua Chenyu performed his song “I really miss you coming back”. The stage background design during his performance was rich in symbolism, featuring graphics of a white falling figure, shattered glass, scattered clocks, and a puzzle-filled hourglass.
Hua Chenyu had publicly referred to Yu Menglong as his “best brother” and fondly called him “Ling’er.” When Yu was eliminated from the competition, Hua Chenyu was visibly emotional, needing assistance due to his distress.
Netizens discussed Hua Chenyu’s symbolic stage design during his performance on social media, with some saying, “The falling body, the empty hand that didn’t catch, the broken glass, scattered watches, and the world filled with flowers on the other side.” Another netizen expressed, “The hand appeared, directly catching the falling person. He must have also wanted to reach out and grab him at that moment.”
Support and understanding poured in from netizens towards Hua Chenyu’s tribute to his friend, acknowledging his way of speaking up for his friend. One comment read, “He must be in so much pain! But he can only use his own way to speak for him.” Another remarked, “He commemorated his friend in a different way; if he could, he would probably want to catch him too.”
Other contestants from the 2013 season of “Happy Boys Voice” also voiced their condolences. Ning Huanyu was the first to share the studio’s obituary, coincidentally on his birthday. Jia Shangqiang, Bai Jugang, and others expressed their sorrow through various means, reminiscing about the shared youth.
Public doubts and suspicions persist regarding the cause of Yu Menglong’s death being labeled as “fall after drinking.” The authorities swiftly cracked down, first summoning and warning Xiaohongshu for allegedly promoting negative information about celebrities.
Subsequently, mainstream platforms like Weibo and Kuaishou faced similar penalties, with many posts discussing the Yu Menglong incident deleted and some accounts banned. Even a post from Hong Kong artist Chen Xiaodong in solidarity quickly disappeared.
On September 21st, Beijing police issued their first official announcement, reiterating that Yu Menglong’s death was due to a “drunken accident fall” and claimed that three individuals who “fabricated and spread rumors” were dealt with. This move has been dubbed by outsiders as the “most stringent celebrity gossip ban in history.”
On September 24th, Taiwanese actress Lin Caiti shared a screenshot on Threads, revealing that her post on Weibo forwarding the alleged abuse video of Yu Menglong was deleted in less than a minute.
While sharing his insights in an interview with Epoch Times, overseas scholar Wu Zuolai pointed out the core question surrounding the Yu Menglong incident lies in the authorities’ abnormal speed of response and severity of control. Such extensive control requires meticulous operation from higher levels to the public security system to efficiently manage public opinion.
Furthermore, online rumors suggest that Yu Menglong was abused for refusing to comply with the unwritten rules of the entertainment industry. According to a report by the Liberty Times on September 23rd, Taiwanese numerologist Shen Rong accessed the spiritual “Akashic Records” to analyze the cause of Yu Menglong’s death based on the frequency of his soul’s energy. She stated that upon contacting his soul, she felt strong signals of “I did not commit suicide,” along with frequencies indicating “death by abuse” and “being framed,” indicating it was not a simple accident.
Shen Rong further revealed traces in Yu Menglong’s energy indicating “being violently treated” and “being molested,” painting a picture of his unimaginable circumstances before his passing. Additionally, there were signals of a “fear of being killed.”
After the incident, fans uncovered instances of Yu Menglong appearing with unexplained bruises around his eyes and mouth at airports, suggesting signs of assault. During a live broadcast when asked about the bruise on his forehead, he replied, “If I suddenly disappear, it’s definitely not accidental.”
