2 dead, 10 injured in Jiangxi primary school knife attack, suspect reportedly a relative of a teacher

On May 20th, in Guixi, Yingtan, Jiangxi Province, a primary school saw a stabbing incident where a woman wielding a knife attacked multiple students. Reports circulating online suggest that the perpetrator is a relative of a teacher at the school. Authorities have confirmed at least 2 fatalities and 10 injuries.

Pictures and social media conversations surfaced on the mainland on the 20th, indicating that a violent incident occurred at a school in Wenfang Town, Guixi, Yingtan, Jiangxi. A woman attacked several primary school students with a knife. Some parents were seen carrying injured children, while others appeared to be crying out to see their kids.

Netizens claimed that “at Wenfang Mingde (Elementary School) entrance, six students were stabbed,” “eight elementary school students were killed,” “intestines were spilled out,” and “the woman was seeking revenge on society.”

According to China News Weekly, the local police station confirmed the arrest of the suspect. Staff at the Wenfang Town Health Center stated that the injured had been transferred to Guixi People’s Hospital for further treatment. Officials from the Guixi City Education Bureau mentioned that the situation at the scene is currently unclear.

The Beijing News reported that responders at the scene stated multiple students were injured. All students on campus were taken back home by their parents, and the resumption of classes is pending.

The Public Security Bureau in Guixi City announced that around noon on May 20th, a 45-year-old woman named Pan committed a stabbing incident at Mingde Elementary School in Wenfang Town using a fruit knife, resulting in two fatalities and 10 injuries.

Netizens commented, “The incident happened at 12 o’clock, but it wasn’t seen until 4:30 in the afternoon, and the news was almost impossible to find.” They speculated that it might have been censored. Questions arose about how such an incident could occur as outsiders are not allowed on campus outside of school hours. People mentioned that the perpetrator was a teacher’s spouse and had already been apprehended.

“Why is it always children involved? How can so many people at the school not control a single person? Poor children,” one comment read. Concerns were raised about schools becoming increasingly dangerous places. “It’s terrifying; schools are constantly facing incidents.”

There have been previous incidents similar to this tragedy. On April 8th, in Yongzhou City, Hunan Province, a former teacher at a school wounded three teachers with a knife.

On the evening of April 7th, a homicide occurred on the campus of Shandong Jiaotong University, resulting in one fatality. Reports indicated that a student had killed a teacher using a knife.

On the afternoon of March 22nd, at the entrance of Beidingji Junior High School in Beidingji Town, Shuyang County, Jiangsu, a 13-year-old boy stabbed to death a boy under 16 years old with a knife.
