New York City Police Department stated on Saturday (August 9) that a shooting incident occurred at Times Square, resulting in three injuries. One person has been arrested in connection with the shooting and is currently being questioned by authorities. The suspect has not been charged with any offenses at this time.
According to various media reports, the shooting incident took place around 1:20 AM early Saturday morning. The details of the incident’s progress have not been disclosed by the police so far.
Videos circulating on social media show people fleeing the scene in panic as police surrounded a car and attended to the injured individuals lying on the ground.
Ambulances arrived promptly at the scene of the incident. A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department stated on Saturday that three individuals were injured in the incident. The injured parties include an 18-year-old female, a 19-year-old male, and a 65-year-old male. They are currently receiving treatment at the hospital and are in stable condition.
The New York City Police Department also mentioned that a 17-year-old male has been detained in relation to the incident, and a firearm was confiscated by the authorities.
According to the police, prior to the shooting incident, the suspect had a verbal altercation with one of the victims. It is currently unclear whether the suspect and the victims were acquainted. A 19-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to the foot, an 18-year-old female suffered a graze to the neck, and the third victim was shot in the leg.
Gun violence incidents in New York City have significantly decreased this year. As of August 3, the number of shooting incidents in the city is at its lowest in decades, showing a 23% decrease since last year.
