“Choose ‘Gollum’ to shoot a sequel The director of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ says he reflects human nature”

Recently, director Peter Jackson explained why he decided to film “The Hunt for Gollum” from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, citing that the character of Gollum resonates with audiences due to his backstory. Choosing Andy Serkis as the director was based on their previous collaboration, as Serkis naturally possesses the talent to grasp the essence of the Lord of the Rings story.

On the 15th, producer Peter Jackson discussed the new film “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” and elaborated on his affection for the character of Gollum and why Andy Serkis was suitable as the director. Furthermore, a trailer for the animated movie “Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” is set to be released in June.

For those who have seen “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, it is known that Smeagol transforms into Gollum, shifting from good to evil.

Jackson explained his decision to focus on Gollum in the sequel, stating to “Deadline”, “I have always been intrigued by the character of Gollum/Smeagol because Gollum reflects the darkest side of human nature, while Smeagol can be viewed as sympathetic. I believe he can resonate with readers and movie audiences because we all have a small part of them within us.”

He added, “We really wanted to explore his backstory and delve into his formative experiences, which we didn’t have the chance to introduce in the previous films.”

“The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” are adaptations of the novels “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “The Hobbit” by British author J. R. R. Tolkien.

“The Hunt for Gollum,” a prequel story in the “Lord of the Rings” universe, focuses on the pitiful Hobbit, Smeagol. Fans have been speculating about which characters may appear, and Jackson mentioned, “It is too early to reveal who he will encounter, but needless to say, we will be faithful to Professor Tolkien’s vision.”

Jackson chose British actor Andy Serkis, who played Gollum, to direct “The Hunt for Gollum” and reprise his role as Gollum.

Jackson praised Serkis, stating, “Andy was the second unit director on ‘The Hobbit,’ and working with him was a delight. He is energetic, imaginative, and most importantly, he naturally understands the world of the story, which is vital for returning to Middle-earth. We have collaborated on eight films, each time being a wonderful experience. In this world, no one is better suited than Andy to handle Gollum’s story.”

Apart from the attention surrounding “The Hunt for Gollum,” many are also anticipating another animated fantasy film based on Tolkien’s novels, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.” Warner Bros announced on the 13th that the trailer for the film will debut during the Annecy International Animated Film Festival opening on June 9.

The story of this animated film is set 200 years prior to the live-action “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, with Philipa Boyens, Jackson’s production partner, taking part in the promotional activities at the international animation festival.

“The War of the Rohirrim” narrates the story behind the Helm’s Deep fortress and the mighty Rohan king, Helm Hammerhand. It portrays the evil Lord of the Rings, Wulf, plotting to launch a sudden attack on King Helm of Rohan in vengeance for his father’s death, forcing Helm and his people to fiercely resist at the ancient fortress, later known as Helm’s Deep.

Meanwhile, as the nation faces despair, Helm’s daughter, Helda, must summon the courage to lead the people in a battle against their deadly enemy striving to annihilate them.
