On July 26, Taiwan will hold its first wave of recall voting, which will determine the fate of 24 Kuomintang legislators and the mayor of Hsinchu City. This unprecedented wave of recalls in Taiwan is not a showdown between the blue and green camps, but rather a recall movement against the red camp.
Today, Taiwan’s culture and contemporary Chinese culture are completely different. Contemporary Chinese culture is essentially a banana culture with Marxism-Leninism as its foundation and tradition as its tool, while Taiwan’s culture is a highly integrated culture of diverse traditions. The outcome of this recall battle will largely determine the direction of Taiwan’s cultural future.
Democratic politics require the separation of powers, with various powers balancing each other. However, after the expansion of powers in the Taiwan Legislature, it severely weakened the executive, judicial, and supervisory powers, which has alarmed the people of Taiwan. This large-scale recall movement reflects the maturity of Taiwan’s democratic political system and its electorate.
