TSMC Arizona Factory Explosion Results in One Injury

On Thursday, Taiwan chip manufacturer TSMC stated that there was an accident at the construction site of its factory in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. A garbage truck driver was injured and sent to the hospital, but the TSMC facility was not damaged.

According to the Arizona Republic, officials from the Phoenix, Glendale, and Daisy Mountain fire departments were dispatched to TSMC around 2:30 pm. The Phoenix Fire Department reported that the reason for the alarm was an explosion at the factory.

TSMC is the world’s largest contract chipmaker, with customers including Apple and Nvidia.

Reuters reported that TSMC later stated in a press release that neither company employees nor on-site construction workers reported any related injuries. The company added, “This is an ongoing investigation and we are unable to share more details at this time.”

After the news broke, the stock price of TSMC, listed in Taipei, gave back earlier gains on Thursday morning, ending with around a 0.8% increase.

Last month, TSMC agreed to increase its planned investment by $25 billion to $65 billion and to establish a third semiconductor plant in Arizona by 2030.

The company will produce the world’s most advanced 2-nanometer technology chips at its second factory in Arizona, with production scheduled to begin in 2028.
