Unity Month Starts in July: Legislator Calls for Nationwide Drills to Build a Resilient Taiwan

Taiwanese legislator Chen Guanting announced that the government will designate July as “National Unity Month,” integrating the Wan An Exercise and the Han Guang Exercise. This initiative aims to combine disaster preparedness drills, first aid training, strengthening of urban resilience, military exercises, and various scenarios to effectively address threats from the Chinese Communist Party across different levels, from gray zone provocations to full-scale conflicts.

The Office of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) revealed on the 21st that President Lai Ching-te will launch the “Ten Lectures on National Unity,” advocating for national unity. The themes include the state, unity, constitutional system, diplomacy, defense, cross-strait relations, democracy, peace, prosperity, and balanced development in Taiwan. Following this, on the 26th, Lai Ching-te will convene the 4th meeting of the National Defense Resilience Committee, announcing the initiation of “National Unity Month” in July.

Legislator Chen Guanting highlighted in a social media post that while the Wan An Exercise has focused on disaster preparedness and the Han Guang Exercise on military maneuvers in the past, they were conducted separately. However, facing escalated threats from the Chinese Communist Party, ranging from gray zone provocations to potential full-scale conflicts, Taiwan must establish a more comprehensive response mechanism.

Chen Guanting emphasized that the government plans to mark July as “National Unity Month,” integrating drills from various scenarios, including disaster preparedness, first aid training, urban resilience exercises, and the Han Guang military exercises. Through comprehensive integration, the country’s overall defense capabilities will be enhanced.

It is understood that the 4th meeting of the National Defense Resilience Committee will discuss the integration of the Han Guang Exercise with urban drills on the 26th. The live-fire exercises of the Han Guang Exercise will take place from July 9th to 18th, featuring air defense evacuation drills in Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan. The exercises will follow the same set of scenarios, with Han Guang focusing on military aspects and urban resilience air defense drills emphasizing civilian response.

Chen Guanting stressed that safeguarding the nation is not solely the responsibility of the military; every citizen can play a role in protecting themselves and assisting society. Through joint exercises between military and non-military sectors, Taiwan demonstrates its strong defense will and determination to protect itself, embodying the spirit of national defense resilience that the international community expects to see from Taiwan.

Previously, the Office of the President of the Republic of China announced on the 21st that President Lai Ching-te will launch the “Ten Lectures on National Unity,” aiming to engage directly with society to clarify the government’s positions, promote social dialogue, and maximize national unity. In the evening of the 22nd, Lai Ching-te attended the “Rotary International District 3490 Sub-District Joint Meeting” and delivered the first lecture on “National” in the “Ten Lectures on National Unity.”

Lai Ching-te stated that since taking office on May 20th last year, he has actively cooperated with like-minded nations on various fronts to showcase Taiwan as a force for good globally, capable and willing to contribute more to the international community. Domestically, he hopes to unite the people, political parties, and the nation to tackle various challenges, including enhancing national defense, economic resilience, and addressing issues, especially threats of annexation from the Chinese Communist Party.

Lai Ching-te emphasized that “Taiwan’s national sovereignty belongs to 23 million people, and our sovereignty and governance cover Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu.” He criticized the Chinese Communist Party’s distortion of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, asserting sovereignty over Taiwan, stating that the international community does not agree with nor recognize such claims.

Facing Chinese Communist Party propaganda and military intimidation, as well as threats from the five major security and united front tactics, Taiwan will bravely confront these challenges. Taiwan’s current economic achievements are remarkable, and its performance in freedom and democracy is outstanding. The President hopes to continue working with all Taiwanese to unite the will of the 23 million people, safeguard national sovereignty, democracy, freedom, the existing way of life, and the future of the next generation, shining the beacon of Taiwan’s democracy to the world.
