Trump: Progress in US-Iran Nuclear Talks Expected to Bring Positive News This Week

On Sunday, US President Trump said that substantial progress has been made in the fifth round of negotiations between the US and Iran on the nuclear issue and hinted that “good news” may be announced within the week. However, Iran remains cautious, emphasizing that the negotiations are too complex to reach a conclusion in the short term.

Trump, speaking to reporters at Morristown Airport in New Jersey on Sunday, stated that the outcome of the fifth round of talks between the US and Iran on the nuclear issue was “very, very good,” with both sides achieving “real and serious progress” during the negotiations.

“We’ve had some very good talks with Iran, and we’ll wait and see, but I think there might be some good news from Iran,” Trump said.

He added, “I don’t know if I’ll tell you in the next two days whether it’s good news or bad news, but I have a feeling it might be good news.”

Emphasizing his desire to avoid war and casualties, Trump said, “I really hope we don’t see bombs dropping and no one losing their lives. I really hope we can achieve that.”

Last Friday, US and Iranian representatives held the fifth round of nuclear negotiations in Rome, led by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

However, Iran remains cautious about the progress of the negotiations. Araghchi said after the meeting, “These negotiations are too complex to be resolved in two or three meetings.”

As the mediator in these negotiations, Oman’s Foreign Minister Albusaidi also stated on the social platform X that the fifth round of talks “has made some progress, but it is not yet decisive,” adding that he hopes the “remaining issues” can be clarified in the coming days.

In recent years, Iran has been increasing its nuclear activities, with uranium enrichment purity now at 60%, far above the 3.67% limit set in the 2015 agreement but still below the 90% standard required for making nuclear bombs.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will convene a meeting in June to review Iran’s nuclear activities.

US media has reported that Israel has made military deployments in anticipation of negotiations collapsing, indicating the possibility of a rapid strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities if diplomatic efforts fail.
