Promoting Real ID Driver’s Licenses Strengthened, New York DMV Sets up Temporary Application Site.

As the deadline for the implementation of the “Real ID” driver’s license set by the federal government approaches – starting on May 7, 2025 – there is only about a year left. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be setting up temporary application sites across the state to provide services. People will no longer need to visit fixed DMV offices to renew their old New York State driver’s licenses with the “Real ID” driver’s license.

According to a report by Gothamist on May 8, DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder stated that currently only 7 million New York State residents have Real IDs that meet federal requirements, which is less than half of the state’s population.

In response to the Real ID Act enacted after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, residents without Real IDs will not be able to board domestic flights or enter federal government buildings. However, residents with a US passport can use it as an alternative form of identification.

To assist residents, the DMV has compiled a detailed guide outlining the documents required when applying for a Real ID, including proof of name, Social Security number, and residency in the state. The DMV also encourages residents to pre-screen documents on their official website to save time.

DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder emphasized the importance of not waiting until the last minute and urged residents to take action now to update their Real IDs.

Temporary application sites will be available at the following events and locations:

(1) NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) 35th Annual Fleet and Vehicle Show (May 16)
(2) Jones Beach State Park Bethpage Air Show (May 25-26)
(3) Queens Public Library (June 4, June 20, July 10)
(4) Colonie Center Mall (June 8, August 10)
(5) Hempstead Lake State Park (June 8)
(6) Sunken Meadow State Park (July 6, July 20)
(7) Jones Beach State Park (July 13-14)
(8) Robert Moses State Park (July 27, August 3)
(9) Altamont Fair (August 13-18)
(10) New York State Fair (August 21-September 2)

Additionally, DMV staff will be present during peak hours at Albany International Airport, Syracuse Hancock International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Long Island MacArthur Airport to explain the necessity of Real IDs to travelers.
