From Pink to Activist: The Awakening Journey of a Young Man Escaping to the US

In a recent interview, twenty-something mainland Chinese youth Hu Xinhao shared his experiences and awakening from being a devoted supporter of the Communist Party to becoming an active voice in the overseas anti-communist movement. Originally from Xiazhuang Town in Shandong Province, Hu recalled his high school days when he was a fervent believer in the party’s ideologies and quick to defend the country against any criticisms, describing himself as a typical “little pink.”

Growing up in a modest rural family, Hu had high hopes for the Communist Party leadership, believing that the top officials were benevolent while attributing any discontent to corruption at the grassroots level. However, his beliefs began to falter when his family encountered a crisis in 2020. His sister fell seriously ill, plunging the family into financial hardship. Despite applying for poverty alleviation assistance, they were only recognized as low-income households, receiving meager monthly subsidies that were far from sufficient to cover medical expenses.

Disillusioned by the government’s lack of support when they needed it most, Hu’s faith in the authorities crumbled. He recounted a harrowing experience during which he attempted to petition for help but instead faced detention and intimidation by plainclothes police officers. Despite his fear and the violent treatment he endured, Hu was coerced into signing a declaration renouncing further appeals.

After losing his job due to his activism and subsequent attempts to seek justice, Hu decided to flee China. Making his way to the United States via Hong Kong and several other countries, he managed to secure asylum and now resides in California, where he works in a Chinese restaurant and actively participates in activities organized by the China Democracy Party, becoming a fresh voice in the overseas anti-communist movement.

Hu’s journey towards awakening included accessing banned online content that exposed him to historical events like the Tiananmen Square massacre and the true nature of the Communist Party’s rule. Shocked by the brutality of the regime’s actions, he began to question the sanitized version of history presented in Chinese textbooks, recognizing it as a form of indoctrination rather than education.

Despite facing surveillance, threats, and pressure from the Chinese authorities even while abroad, Hu remains steadfast in his commitment to speaking out against the injustices perpetrated by the regime. Joining the China Democracy Party and engaging in activities commemorating events such as the June Fourth Movement, he refuses to be silenced despite the risks posed to his family and himself.

Hu’s ultimate wish is to reunite with his parents in a third country, acknowledging the sacrifices they made to support his journey to freedom. With gratitude towards his family’s unwavering support, Hu is determined to continue speaking the truth and exposing the atrocities committed by the Communist Party, knowing that it is the most effective form of protection for his loved ones and a crucial step towards bringing about change.
