New York Governor Announces Release of Suffolk County State-Owned Land to Address Housing Crisis

New York State recently passed the 2025 fiscal year budget to address the housing crisis, reaching a housing agreement. Governor Hochul announced on May 3 that 13 acres of state-owned land in Suffolk County would be released for use as the first housing development site, and developers are invited to submit proposals.

The land designated for housing development is located in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County in the Hamlet of East Farmingdale, bordering Conklin St to the south, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to the north, and Broadhollow Road/Route 110 to the west, with a total area of approximately 13 acres currently managed by the New York State Department of Transportation. The land was previously used for aircraft manufacturing, is now vacant, and prepared for demolition.

The location benefits from convenient transportation, being only a mile away from the Farmingdale and Pinelawn LIRR stations on Long Island Rail Road and close to the important commercial center on Route 110, displaying significant development potential.

The Empire State Development will closely cooperate with the Town of Babylon to develop this land into a mixed-use hub, not only providing much-needed housing but also stimulating economic growth and creating job opportunities for the entire East Farmingdale area. This development project will reserve 20% of the housing as affordable housing, available to families with incomes below 80% of the area’s median income.

On the same day, the state government issued a Request for Proposals, inviting developers interested in participating in the development to submit bids. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on August 7, and the online submission link is: https://tinyurl.com/5n7v6sk7
