Following the passage of United Nations Resolution 2758 by the British Parliament on the 28th, which does not involve Taiwan, the Office of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expressed gratitude today (29th), stating that Taiwan will continue to stand with the international democratic society to contribute to global democracy and prosperity.
The House of Commons of the British Parliament conducted a debate on “Taiwan’s international status” in the main chamber on the 28th and passed the motion without objection, noting that the 1971 United Nations Resolution 2758 did not mention Taiwan, did not address Taiwan’s political status, and did not establish the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China over Taiwan.
Spokesperson for the Office of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Kuo Ya-hui, stated, “Sincerely grateful to the British Parliament and the British Government for their support for Taiwan. This resolution clearly refutes the misinterpretation by the Chinese Communist Party of the content of the UN Resolution 2758 and Beijing’s attempt to suppress Taiwan’s international space. The resolution further emphasizes that Taiwan, as a member of the international community, should have fair and meaningful opportunities for participation, for which our government expresses its gratitude.”
Kuo Ya-hui expressed that this resolution by the British Parliament not only demonstrates the correct understanding of the original intent of the United Nations resolution by the international community but also shows a firm stance in support of Taiwan’s democratic values and international participation. Taiwan is willing to stand with democratic alliance countries to jointly defend core values such as freedom, democracy, and human rights that are shared by all.
Kuo Ya-hui pointed out, “Recently, countries such as Australia, the Netherlands, the European Parliament, and Canada have successively passed relevant resolutions, expressing high importance on this issue and jointly rejecting the incorrect interpretation of Taiwan’s status by the Chinese government. The Taiwan government and people sincerely appreciate this support, and our country will continue to stand with the international democratic society to contribute to global democracy and prosperity.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China stated, “The passage of this motion by the British Parliament fully demonstrates strong support for Taiwan. The British government, through the statement by Vice Minister for the West, publicly expressed its position on UN Resolution 2758 for the first time, highlighting another important milestone since our country has been erroneously excluded from important international cooperation and discussion mechanisms due to the Chinese Communist Party’s distortion of that resolution. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highly appreciates and sincerely thanks for this.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan pointed out, “The motion was proposed by Blair McDougall, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British House of Commons, with co-signatories including members from across party lines, such as Sarah Champion, co-chair of the Taiwan-UK All-Party Parliamentary Group, and Iain Duncan Smith, Co-Chair of the IPAC UK, from the Labour Party, Conservative Party, Liberal Democrats, and Scottish National Party, a total of 16 members, demonstrating the firm support of British parliamentary members from all political parties for our country’s international status and participation.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan stated that the House of Commons of the British Parliament is the fifth foreign legislative body globally to pass a similar motion after the “Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC)” annual meeting in July 2024 passed the “IPAC Resolutions on UN Resolution 2758” template, and following the passage of related motions by national parliaments of countries such as Australia, the Netherlands, Guatemala, Canada, and the European Parliament. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs once again expresses sincere gratitude for the support from all sectors.
