Manhattan Assailant Stabs Danish Tourist Unprovoked, 25-Year-Old Man has History of Mental Illness

New York City, November 23, 2024 – A 25-year-old man from New York City, Joshua Zinberg, was arrested on the 20th in Manhattan’s Upper West Side for inexplicably slashing a Danish tourist, causing injuries to the victim’s face, ears, and neck. Zinberg was apprehended the following morning and charged with attempted murder and assault.

The incident took place at the intersection of West 86th Street and Columbus Avenue, just a 5-minute walk from Central Park.

According to the New York Post, Zinberg lives just a block away from the crime scene and has a history of mental illness. Following the incident, Zinberg’s mother took matters into her own hands and voluntarily went to the police station to report her son’s involvement in the crime. Zinberg was apprehended around 1 a.m. on the 21st, and upon leaving the police station that afternoon, he shouted and screamed at reporters present.

Zinberg is facing charges of one count of second-degree attempted murder, one count of first-degree assault, one count of second-degree assault, and one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Around 10:30 a.m. on the 20th, the 55-year-old Danish tourist and a friend were walking on the street when they were attacked from behind by Zinberg, leaving visible lacerations on their face, ears, and neck. The tourist received medical treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.

After the attack, Zinberg initially fled the scene on foot, and later escaped in an orange Subaru car.

Reports indicate that while Zinberg did not have a history of arrests, his mother had reported to the police about threatening messages sent by him, related to issues with a shared account between them.

Sources mentioned that as early as May 2020, Zinberg was described as emotionally unstable when the authorities were called, allegedly holding a knife while opening the door. The same sources described Zinberg as paranoid and having consumed marijuana a few hours before the incident, leading to his hospitalization at Sinai Hospital for treatment.
