Official Investigation Launched into Stale Meat Incident at Kunming School Cafeteria; Netizens Question Authorities

The “zombie meat (rotten meat)” incident in the cafeteria of Changfeng Middle School in Kunming, Yunnan Province continues to escalate. Rights-protecting parents are angered by the school leaders’ dismissive attitude. The authorities claim to have established a joint investigation team to look into the matter, while netizens express doubts.

Kunming Changfeng School in Yunnan Province was exposed for having “the whole pot of meat being rotten.” According to a report by Lu Mei Da Feng News on the 19th, the Market Supervision and Administration Bureau of the Guandu District in Kunming City responded that the district government has formed a joint investigation team composed of six departments to investigate the matter.

On October 16th, at Changfeng School in Kunming, Yunnan, the school cafeteria was found to be serving students with spoiled “zombie meat,” sparking dissatisfaction among parents. According to feedback from parents on-site, they noticed a peculiar smell coming from the meat products, raising serious concerns about the food safety management in the school cafeteria.

Video footage from the scene shows several pots of meat, with parents becoming emotional, expressing that the meat is “really stinky,” accusing the school cafeteria of serving “all rotten meat” and questioning its conscience. When a chef admitted to “negligence,” one parent reprimanded, “It’s not negligence, where is your conscience? Has your child eaten the cockroach? Has your child eaten the rotten meat?”

According to parents, students attending this school commonly have poor appetites, with children mentioning that the meat at school tastes strange, leading parents to believe it was just picky eating. It wasn’t until a student was hospitalized due to stomach discomfort that parents started to take notice.

On October 17th, Kunming officials reported that there was a strange smell in the high school cafeteria, and law enforcement officers sealed off the food ingredients in the cafeteria. The school and the company involved have been investigated, and the school cafeteria has stopped providing meals.

In response to the announcement of the joint investigation by local authorities involving six departments, many netizens expressed skepticism:

– “Why not have 60 departments join the investigation? It’s strange, the facts are there, what more is there to investigate? From the principal to the school board, suppliers, all should be held accountable! Every time something happens, they want an investigation, but why? Intentionally delaying time! Or intentional cover-up.”

– “Without the protection of important individuals in the education system behind, not even with a hundred guts would they dare! The ones who should be severely punished are the protectors who took bribes, colluding between officials and businessmen, harming children, it’s despicable!”

– “Only six departments? Should I be happy or sad?”

– “What about those that haven’t been exposed?”

– “In such cases, it is suggested that the student union and parents form their own investigative team to uncover the truth!”

– “Conducting an investigation on oneself, is there a problem or not?”

During a parents’ meeting at noon on the 17th, after the leaders of Changfeng School gave perfunctory speeches and left, parents became angry. Many parents shouted, “Don’t leave!” “I still have questions!” But these officials ignored them, prompting parents to block their way, questioning, “Are you here to solve the problem?” “You can’t leave!”

After videos related to the incident were circulated overseas, some netizens believe that the situation is deeply rooted: “Useless, school food safety issues are recurring, have any been properly resolved? The situation here is deeply rooted!” “Was the meat forced upon them to buy? So, the principal isn’t afraid of repercussions… “Why so arrogant? Is it because at the higher levels of the industry chain, there are vested interests supporting them.”

Overseas netizens stated: “A chairman of a joint-stock private school confidently gives students rotten meat to eat, nonchalantly with hands in pockets… Such a significant scandal yet taken so lightly, is the arrogance backed by support from behind? Of course.” “This is the evil of the CCP, starting from childhood using various methods to weaken the people! Because children within the system have exclusive schools and exclusive cafeterias! So, as long as the CCP exists, disasters will continue!”

In recent days, local government authorities have deployed a large number of police to guard the school, and the incident is still unfolding.

Previously, parents captured frozen meat labels showing that the frozen meat, commonly known as “zombie meat,” had a production date around 2015, nearly 9 years ago. However, the school claims that all the frozen meat is from this year.

The school involved is Changfeng School at Yunzi Middle School in Guandu District, Kunming City, Yunnan Province. It is a private school founded jointly in 2016 by Kunming No. 12 Middle School and Yunnan Jin Nuo Education Investment Holding Group Company. Some parents have mentioned that the annual tuition fee at Changfeng School is 26,000 yuan, and the cafeteria provides lunch and dinner, with a cost of 14 yuan per meal, which is higher than many public schools and even some private schools.
