Ningbo Woman Falls to Death in Shopping Mall, Online Chat Records Suggest She Forced Liquidation of Stocks

After the “National Day” holiday, trading resumed in the mainland stock market. On that day, a woman in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, fell to her death in a shopping mall. Chat messages circulated on the internet suggest that she might have used leverage up to ten times to invest 50 million yuan in stocks and committed suicide after blowing up her account. Local police, however, dismissed this as a “rumor” and have summoned the so-called suspects.

The A-share market in mainland China reopened on October 8th. At noon on the same day, a woman fell from a building in a shopping mall at No. 500 Da Zha Nan Road, Jiangbei District, Ningbo, and died despite rescue efforts.

Following the incident, screenshots of WeChat chat conversations surfaced online. In one post, someone wrote, “Pledged the house before the holiday, leveraged up to ten times to invest 50 million, went all-in on bidding, didn’t expect to blow up in just one day, my heart is calm. This is my own choice, can’t blame anyone, perhaps tranquility is my destiny.” Netizens speculated that this was the woman’s chat content from the night before the incident in the shopping mall and might be the reason for her suicide.

On September 24th, the Chinese officialdom rolled out a series of measures to support the stock market, leading to several days of heavy trading and surges in the A-share market. The Shanghai Composite Index finally climbed back above the 3,000-point mark.

In the afternoon of October 8th, the Waidichou Street Office in Jiangbei District, Ningbo reported that around 12:40 PM on October 8th, a woman fell from a building in a shopping mall at No. 500 Da Zha Nan Road and was sent to the hospital but could not be saved. It was confirmed not to be a criminal case.

The local public security bureau released a statement saying rumors linking the incident to the stock market have appeared online. Currently, relevant suspects involved in spreading rumors have been summoned for investigation.
