Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has warned that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has infiltrated various levels of American society, including state governments. Pompeo spoke out following the arrest of Sun Wen, a former deputy chief of staff in the New York Governor’s Office, on charges of acting as an agent for the CCP.
Pompeo revealed on social media that during his tenure as Secretary of State, he had personally warned 50 governors about the CCP’s activities within the United States. He likened the situation to the Trojan Horse story, where the enemy gains entry through deceit and subversion.
He emphasized the gravity of the situation by stating that the case of Sun Wen is just the tip of the iceberg. From parent-teacher associations to local officials and state governors, Pompeo highlighted the CCP’s clandestine efforts to influence American society and politics.
Sun Wen, who was born in Nanjing and moved to the U.S. at a young age, held various high-ranking positions in the New York state government before her arrest. Despite the charges brought against her for violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act and engaging in CCP-related activities, Sun Wen has pleaded not guilty.
Pompeo underscored the need for all Americans, especially elected officials, to recognize and address the severe threat posed by the CCP’s infiltration into U.S. institutions. He warned that the CCP’s strategic intentions must not be underestimated, calling for transparency and reciprocity in U.S.-China relations.
The former Secretary of State pointed out that CCP operatives have been active in American states, including New York, Illinois, Texas, and California, exerting political influence contrary to diplomatic norms. He called attention to the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston due to espionage activities, which prompted retaliatory measures from Beijing.
In a column published in the New York Post, Pompeo reiterated the importance of acknowledging the CCP’s hostile ideologies towards the U.S. He stressed that America’s security lies in understanding and countering the CCP’s threats through transparent and mutually beneficial approaches.
Pompeo’s warnings serve as a reminder for American leaders to remain vigilant against CCP infiltration and safeguard national interests. The revelations of CCP influence within U.S. state governments highlight the ongoing challenges posed by foreign interference and the imperative for strong countermeasures to protect American democracy and sovereignty.
