Chinese military aircraft violated Japanese airspace, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemns.

On August 28, 2024, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Yun-9 reconnaissance aircraft violated Japan’s territorial airspace near the Diaoyu Islands. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China strongly condemned the PLA for arbitrarily violating the sovereignty of other countries and disrupting regional peace and stability. Additionally, the Ministry of National Defense stated that from 6 a.m. on the 27th to 6 a.m. today (28th), a total of 27 PLA aircraft were detected crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait, with the Taiwanese military using joint methods to closely monitor and respond.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense’s Joint Staff Office, on the morning of the 26th from 11:29 to 11:31 a.m., a PLA Yun-9 reconnaissance aircraft intruded into Japan’s airspace near the Nagasaki Prefecture’s Diaoyu Islands. This was the first confirmed violation of Japan’s airspace by a Chinese military aircraft. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hojo Shinmasa stated on the 27th that the intrusion of the Chinese military aircraft on the 26th not only seriously infringed upon Japan’s sovereignty but also posed a threat to Japan’s security, which is “completely unacceptable.” Japan has lodged a strong protest through diplomatic channels.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China issued a press release stating that on the morning of August 26, a PLA Yun-9 reconnaissance aircraft intruded into the airspace near the Diaoyu Islands of Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, seriously violating Japanese sovereignty and escalating regional tensions. The Ministry strongly condemned the Chinese Communist Party for its reckless actions in infringing upon the sovereignty of other countries and disrupting regional peace and stability.

The Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that recently, the Chinese Communist Party has continuously intruded into the air defense identification zones and exclusive economic zones of both Taiwan and Japan with military aircraft and warships, escalating tensions in the region. Furthermore, China, in collaboration with Russia, has been conducting frequent military exercises in the East China Sea and South China Sea, attempting to use force to change the status quo. These military expansion activities pose a significant threat to the security of countries in the Indo-Pacific region, including Taiwan and Japan.

The Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned and once again urged the Chinese Communist Party to return to rationality and self-restraint, immediately cease all actions that disrupt peace in the Taiwan Strait and escalate regional tensions. As a responsible member of the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan will continue to enhance its self-defense capabilities while working with like-minded countries, including Japan, to jointly counter the expansion and aggression of authoritarianism.

As the Chinese Communist Party continues to pose a threat of military force against Taiwan, the Republic of China’s Ministry of National Defense has announced the recent activities of Chinese military aircraft around Taiwan. From 6 a.m. on the 27th to 6 a.m. today, a total of 30 PLA aircraft (including 27 crossing the median line into the southwest and eastern airspace of Taiwan), 7 warships, and 1 government ship have been detected operating around the Taiwan Strait.

The Taiwan Ministry of National Defense released a graphic illustrating the Chinese military’s activities in the airspace around Taiwan. From 7:33 a.m. on the 27th to 5:33 a.m. today, the Taiwanese military detected 20 Chinese main and support fighter jets and drones, with 17 crossing the median line of the strait, and some planes approaching Goose Neck Point within about 50 nautical miles.

From 7:57 a.m. to 9:07 p.m. on the 27th, the Taiwanese military detected 9 main and support fighter jets in the southwest airspace of Taiwan, with the closest distance to Goose Neck Point at about 66 nautical miles. From 4:28 p.m. to 6:35 p.m. on the 27th, a helicopter was spotted in the eastern airspace of Taiwan, approximately 59 nautical miles from Green Island.

The Taiwan Ministry of National Defense stated that the Taiwanese military is utilizing reconnaissance aircraft, ships, and shore-based missile systems to closely monitor and respond to these activities.
