The Malaysian (US-resident) Association declared on August 2 that after years of advocacy, progress has been made on resolving the historical issues surrounding Malaysian citizens residing in the United States and neighboring countries regarding Malaysian identification cards and passports. Recently, the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) will be accepting relevant document applications for Malaysian expatriates at the Malaysian Consulate General in New York through the National Registration Department (NRD).
Six matters that the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs is assisting with include:
1. Initial application/replacement/change of Malaysian identification card;
2. Application for modification of identification card details;
3. Application for obtaining birth certificates;
4. Application for duplicate citizenship certificates;
5. Application for registration of overseas births;
6. Application for modification of foreign birth forms (Forms W/H).
Co-chairs of the Malaysian (US-resident) Association, Liao Ruilong and Executive Director Chen Yahan, mentioned that according to information from Malaysia, the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) through the National Registration Department (NRD) will process applications in New York in August and September. Those in need of assistance must fill out the form online before August 10th, even if they have previously filled it out. Failure to register in advance will result in being unable to proceed.
Liao Ruilong reminded that regardless of successful processing, applicants are advised to take the opportunity to register in advance. When filling out the form, be careful not to enter the wrong email address to ensure receipt of responses from the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs. The registration process is simple, requiring information such as name, Malaysian ID, birth certificate number, and the type of document needed.
Due to various factors, some Malaysian expatriates are unable to return to Malaysia to update their documents. The Malaysian (US-resident) Association has long communicated these issues with the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs. In March 2023, the Chairman of the Malaysian (US-resident) Association, Pang Junxiong, met with the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Saifuddin, to discuss these matters. The Malaysian government approved a budget last year with plans to send officials to the United States in coordination with the Malaysian Consulate General in New York to address these issues, as many expatriates had previously registered. However, over a year has passed, requiring a complete online registration form to be filled out again for each individual.
To safeguard the privacy of personal document information and for logistical purposes, the first group of officials were sent to the Middle East, while the second group was sent to New York to work with the Malaysian Consulate General in New York to process Malaysian expatriate documents.
The Malaysian (US-resident) Association emphasizes that filling out the registration form online is free and warns against fraud. Considering that some individuals may be elderly or unfamiliar with computer use, assistance will be provided for filling out the forms. Schedule: August 10th (Saturday) from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm; Location: 76 Mott Street New York, Manhattan Chinatown.
