After the attempted assassination of former President Trump in the United States, First Lady Jill Biden and former First Lady Melania Trump had a phone call on Sunday afternoon.
According to The Hill, the office of the First Lady confirmed to the media that their conversation took place earlier on Sunday after Melania issued a statement regarding the assassination attempt last Saturday.
While many media outlets reported this news, there have not been any reports detailing the specifics of their conversation.
In a statement posted on social media on Sunday morning, Melania expressed, “When I saw that violent bullet hit my husband Donald, I realized that our lives, mine and Barron’s, were on the brink of devastating changes.”
She expressed gratitude to the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers who risked their lives to protect Trump, and while conveying her concern for her husband and beloved son Barron, she also mentioned her care for her fellow Americans.
“Today, let’s transcend hate, bitterness, and the foolish ideas that incite violence,” she wrote in the statement, and continued, “The winds of change are coming. To those of you who shout support, I am grateful. I commend those of you who rise above political divides—thank you for remembering that every politician is a man or woman with a family filled with love.”
Before First Lady Jill called Melania, President Biden also had a phone call with Trump shortly after the incident last Saturday evening. Biden later stated that he had a good conversation with his political opponent.
“I sincerely thank him for being in good condition at the moment and on the road to recovery. We had a brief and pleasant conversation,” Biden said on Sunday, adding that he and the First Lady continue to pray for Trump and his family.
On Sunday evening, Biden also delivered a speech to the nation from the Oval Office of the White House, stating that the failed assassination of Trump was causing the United States to regress and calling for all parties to “lower the temperature of our politics.”
