New York City to Experience Hotter and More Humid Weather This Week, Afternoon Thunderstorms Expected, Temperatures Could Reach 100 Degrees Fahrenheit

In the next 5 days, the weather is expected to become more humid and oppressive. The National Weather Service (NWS New York) in New York announced on July 7th that Tuesday and Wednesday will be the hottest days, with the peak temperatures occurring between noon and 6 p.m. The highest temperatures in New York City and Suffolk County, Long Island, are expected to range from 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The New York City public hospital system is reminding the public to stay hydrated when going out, wear light clothing, hats, seek shade to avoid sun exposure, avoid going out during the hottest times of the day, and pay attention to the health of children, elderly, disabled individuals, and those who are physically weak.

The weather service also warns that regardless of whether it’s a scorching hot day or cold winter, children should never be left inside a car. During summer, the temperature inside a car can be 50 degrees higher than outside, and a child left inside can risk death within just 10 minutes.

Statistics show that last year, 29 children in the United States died from heatstroke due to being trapped in hot cars.

Apart from the increasing humidity and heat, the weather service is cautioning the public to be wary of afternoon thunderstorms, especially on Tuesday this week. Afternoon thunderstorms are expected mainly in the northern and western parts of New York City, with the possibility of heavy rain between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.
