Response to China’s new regulations: Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council says it will never accept threats.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) issued a so-called “opinion” on June 21 to “punish Taiwan independence”, with the highest penalty being the death sentence for “splitting the country”. The Mainland Affairs Council of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that the government is determined to defend the freedom and rights of its people and will not accept CCP’s threats and intimidation.

In a press release, the Mainland Affairs Council of the Republic of China emphasized that on the 21st, the CCP announced the “Opinion on Punishing Stubborn Taiwan Independence Separatists for Crimes of Splitting the Country and Inciting Separatism”. The government solemnly reiterated that Taiwan’s 23 million people, in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of China, enjoy unalienable freedoms, democracy, and rights. The Beijing authorities have no judicial jurisdiction over Taiwan, and “the so-called laws and regulations of the CCP have no binding force on our people. The government urges the people to rest assured and not be intimidated by the CCP’s threats.”

The Mainland Affairs Council pointed out that “the actions of the Beijing authorities will only provoke antagonism between the people on both sides of the strait, seriously affect exchanges between the people of the two sides, not contribute to the positive development of cross-strait relations, and present an extremely uncivilized and provocative challenge to countries around the world that love and support Taiwan’s freedom and democracy. We deeply regret this. This case highlights the fundamental difference between the CCP system and our free and democratic constitutional system, which is the root cause of the institutional difference between the two sides of the strait.”

The Mainland Affairs Council explained that in order to maintain one-party authoritarian rule, the CCP lacks a sense of security, continuously strengthens various national security laws and measures, violates the basic human rights of the people on the mainland, and threatens the personal safety of international visitors to the mainland. The government once again reminds the people to carefully consider the necessity of traveling to the mainland of China and urges Taiwanese nationals in the mainland to pay attention to their personal safety.
