NVIDIA CEO Huang Renxun attended the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) annual conference and was asked what advice he would give his younger self if he could go back to being 30 years old. He mentioned that if he were to go back to being 30, he would tell his younger self to “go further.” To lead a life with goals and to do valuable things, one must be more willing to take risks.
According to a report by the Central News Agency, Huang Renxun was this year’s keynote speaker at the EEI annual conference in the United States, where he participated in a conversation with EEI Chairman Pedro J. Pizarro on the 18th. The attendees included managers from American public utilities and the energy industry.
Pizarro asked Huang Renxun, as NVIDIA had faced life and death trials, what he would say to himself if he could go back to being 30. Huang Renxun said, “First of all, the ‘him’ back then wouldn’t listen to anyone, and I would tell him, that’s good, just keep going.”
He said, “We need people who are different, people with different ideas. I would encourage that young self to go further.” He believes that to take an unconventional path, to lead a goal-oriented life, and to do valuable things, one must be more adventurous and pursue a broader perspective.
Huang Renxun stated that he considers himself lucky because he understood certain things early on. “My job is to create conditions for those talented individuals who are willing to work with me for a lifetime career. This is a very good insight for a 30-year-old.”
He also stated, “I share everything with my employees. This is why NVIDIA has so many direct reports, because I want everyone to have the information they need to accomplish great work, and information should not be simplified.”
Huang Renxun mentioned that NVIDIA is known for its transparency. “I would rather risk the outside world knowing NVIDIA’s secrets than risk the employees not knowing our secrets.” He believes that without employees knowing the company’s strategy, goals cannot be achieved. Therefore, he has always worked to create conditions for everyone to complete the work together.
He said he was inspired by the book “Zero to One,” focusing on longer-term issues because without competitors, there is plenty of time to solve problems.
Pizarro asked Huang Renxun how he led NVIDIA to create extraordinary history, admitting that at the beginning, it might have been hard to imagine such success. Huang Renxun said, “I have always known that I am glad I did not go bankrupt, did not feel bored, and was not fired.”
