Transportation Bureau Partners with Staten Island Organization to Donate 125 Bicycles to Help Vulnerable Communities

New York City Transportation Department (NYC DOT) announced on June 13 that they have collaborated with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), and community organizations to donate 125 refurbished bicycles to vulnerable communities and asylum seekers on Staten Island.

Summer is approaching, and it is considered the best time of the year to explore the city by bicycle, according to Ydanis Rodriguez, Commissioner of NYC DOT. He expressed gratitude to the generosity of the Staten Island community, noting that this year’s donation of bicycles has doubled from last year, totaling 125 bicycles.

The four precincts of NYPD on Staten Island will identify underserved communities and individuals in need of bicycles. Manuel Castro, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA), stated in a press release: “The donated bicycles will provide independence to immigrants, especially newcomers, allowing them to navigate the city and find employment.”

Community organizations involved in the project include non-profit organizations such as Bike New York, Project Hospitality, among others. According to the Transportation Department, individuals donating bicycles will receive two FerryHawks game tickets as a token of appreciation for their contribution.

This initiative aims to promote sustainable transportation options, improve access to mobility for underserved populations, and empower immigrants with the means to travel independently and seek opportunities in the city.

The collaborative effort between government agencies, healthcare institutions, and community organizations reflects a commitment to supporting marginalized communities and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society in New York City. The donation of bicycles not only provides a mode of transportation but also symbolizes solidarity and community support for those in need.
