Reduce Sun Exposure for Motorcyclists and Pedestrians, Taipei Shortens Red Light Duration in Summer

In the scorching heat of summer, the Taipei City Traffic Control Engineering Department announced today (13th) that in order to reduce the exposure time of motorcyclists and pedestrians to sunlight, the duration of red lights at intersections will be shortened during the summer, with an average reduction of 21 seconds.

The Taipei City Traffic Control Engineering Department stated that the signal timing in Taipei must consider the needs of traffic relief and pedestrian safety, and coordinate the signal chain operation between intersections. Therefore, major arterial road intersections require longer green lights, leading to longer red light durations.

Due to the hot summer weather, in order to reduce the exposure time of motorcyclists and pedestrians to sunlight, the Taipei City Traffic Control Engineering Department conducted a special review for the summer of 2024 (from July 1st to the end of August), shortening the duration of red lights at 740 intersections to reduce the waiting time for motorcyclists and pedestrians.

According to the data from the Central Weather Bureau, the average temperature in July and August is the highest, often exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. In order to shorten the waiting time and exposure to sunlight for motorcyclists and pedestrians at red lights, the Taipei City Traffic Control Engineering Department reviewed the signal lights at main and secondary roads throughout the city and around school intersections. They have adjusted the durations of red lights during off-peak hours (from 9:00 to 16:30) at 740 locations, such as “Lane 107 of Tianmu East Road,” with an average reduction of 21 seconds for red lights.

The Taipei City Traffic Control Engineering Department will continue to monitor the traffic flow and the interconnection of road sections after adjusting the duration of red lights. They will also review and adjust in a timely manner based on public feedback.
