A father’s simple gift turned into a $100,000 jackpot when his son bought him two lottery tickets while out running errands.
The Maryland Lottery announced this lucky father’s story on September 24. The winner is a retired man living in Washington D.C. who used to work in the transportation sector. He and his son visited the lottery headquarters in Baltimore on September 23 to claim the $100,000 prize.
The story began with a simple gesture. The son was out for the day and told his father he would buy some lottery tickets, offering to pick up one for him as well. Knowing his father’s preference for Pick 5 games and his commonly used number combination “15670,” the son purchased two tickets with identical numbers from a 7-Eleven in Bowie, Maryland.
The reason for buying two tickets was that the son occasionally buys two copies with the same number combination. This time, that habit paid off handsomely.
After the draw that evening, the father checked the results and immediately recognized his numbers. Both tickets were winners, each worth $50,000, totaling $100,000.
“I’ve won prizes in the past, but never anything like this, never hit the jackpot… and now, I got two at once,” the father told the Maryland Lottery officials.
The father and son claimed their prize together on September 23. The son mentioned that although he bought the lottery tickets on his father’s behalf, he believed all credit and the entire prize belonged to his father.
Both winning tickets were purchased from the 7-Eleven at 9500 Ruby Lockhart Boulevard in Bowie. The store that sold the winning tickets also received a $1,000 bonus, with $500 awarded for each winning ticket.
