Fujian dissident Xiang Jinfeng suspected of receiving four-year sentence for online remarks

Fujian dissident Xiang Jinfeng was detained in September 2022 for remarks made online, on suspicion of an unknown crime. Recently, informed sources stated that Xiang Jinfeng has been sentenced to four years in prison and is currently serving his sentence at Yong’an Prison in Fujian Province.

Ms. Yang, a source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity, told a reporter from Epoch Times, “It is known that Xiang Jinfeng has been sentenced to four years in prison, but the specific charges are unknown as his family is not willing to disclose too much information.”

Xiang Jinfeng was detained on September 1, 2022, and held in custody at the Liancheng County Detention Center in Longyan City. His family did not receive a formal notice of detention; instead, they were only informed by the police to sign at the Pengkou Town Police Station.

A netizen with the username “Qiaofu” claimed that Xiang Jinfeng was sentenced shortly before the Chinese New Year in 2024, but the exact charges remain undisclosed due to his family’s discretion, only mentioning that the sentence was for a period of over three years. Currently, Xiang Jinfeng is incarcerated at Yong’an Prison.

Epoch Times attempted to contact Xiang Jinfeng’s brother, Xiang Yanrong, via phone, but the call went unanswered.

Netizens generally believe that Xiang Jinfeng’s current imprisonment may be related to his online remarks.

Xiang Jinfeng has been known for his long-standing advocacy and support for marginalized groups in their fight for rights. In October 2017 and April 2018, he was taken away for questioning by the local national security bureau for discussions of politically sensitive topics within the WeChat groups he managed, as well as his advocacy for civil rights.

On May 17, 2019, Xiang Jinfeng was prevented from leaving the country at Xiamen Gaoqi Airport Customs, and his passport was confiscated. On June 3 and June 4, 2019, he was summoned for questioning by the local police for two consecutive days due to his remarks regarding the events of June 4th.
