On Saturday morning, a serious car accident occurred in the coastal town of Lavallette, New Jersey, where a 93-year-old elderly female driver mistakenly pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake while parking outside a breakfast restaurant. As a result, the SUV she was driving crashed into the outdoor dining area of the restaurant, tragically causing one diner to lose their life and injuring seven others who were subsequently taken to the hospital.
According to the latest investigation released by the Lavallette Police Department and the Ocean County authorities, the accident took place around 11:12 a.m. on Saturday at the popular American restaurant “Meg’s Grill” located at 1401 Grand Central Ave.
At the time of the incident, the outdoor dining tables were full of customers enjoying their weekend brunch. The 93-year-old woman was driving a 2014 Buick Encore and was attempting to park in front of the restaurant when she accidentally mistook the gas pedal for the brake.
The Buick suddenly accelerated forward, crashing into outdoor tables and chairs, and striking multiple diners before hitting the restaurant building itself and the neighboring winery before coming to a stop.
Following the incident, emergency response teams including the Lavallette police, fire department, Seaside Heights police and EMS, and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations.
A 56-year-old woman from the nearby town of Toms River suffered severe injuries. Medical personnel initially planned to airlift her to a trauma center via helicopter, but due to her critical condition, she was urgently transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where, despite efforts to save her, she tragically passed away.
Additionally, seven other customers who were struck sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The 93-year-old female driver only suffered minor injuries and also underwent medical evaluation. The restaurant confirmed that none of its staff members were injured in the accident.
Due to the impact of the collision, the exterior wall of the neighboring winery sustained damage, but the main structure of the restaurant remained largely intact.
Following the accident, the official Facebook page of “Meg’s Grill” issued a statement announcing the temporary closure of the restaurant on Sunday and Monday as a gesture of respect and mourning for the victims.
This tragedy has reignited discussions in New Jersey regarding regulations for senior drivers. Current laws in New Jersey do not impose age limits or specific licensing renewal requirements for elderly drivers; all drivers are subject to the standard license renewal every four years. Studies have shown that elderly drivers have a higher likelihood of mistakenly pressing the gas pedal instead of the brake during low-speed maneuvers or turns compared to other age groups.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lavallette police are currently conducting further investigations into the accident to determine any potential legal responsibilities moving forward.
