Ukraine: Russia’s latest Su-57 fighter jet hit for the first time

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR) announced on June 9 that Ukrainian forces had successfully hit a Russian Su-57 fighter jet at an air force base in Russia for the first time, and satellite images confirmed the attack.

According to Reuters, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Intelligence Directorate did not provide details on how the Su-57 fighter jet was hit in its post on the Telegram messaging app, nor did it specify which unit of the Ukrainian forces carried out the attack.

A well-known Russian military blogger self-identified as “Fighterbomber,” focusing on aviation, confirmed the news about the Su-57 fighter jet and pointed out that it was hit by a drone.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Intelligence Directorate stated that the aircraft was parked at the Akhtubinsk airport, which is 589 kilometers away from the front line of the conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces within Ukrainian territory.

In a post with accompanying images, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Intelligence Directorate stated that the images showed the Su-57 fighter jet was intact on June 7, but on June 8, there were visible signs of damage from explosions, craters, and fire on the ground, indicating damage to the aircraft itself.

Ukraine has been resisting Russia’s full-scale invasion since February 2022, with both sides regularly using missiles and drones to strike targets hundreds of kilometers away in enemy territory.

Due to Ukraine’s lack of a massive missile arsenal like that possessed by the Moscow authorities, the country has focused on manufacturing long-range drones to penetrate Russian territory and target objectives.

The Russian blogger “Fighterbomber” mentioned that the fighter jet was struck by bomb fragments and is currently assessing the extent of the damage to determine if the aircraft can be repaired.

He also stated that if the fighter jet cannot be repaired, it would mark the first combat loss record for the Su-57.
