Recently, a snow avalanche occurred on Glacier No. 2 of Muztagata Peak in Akto County, Xinjiang, with tourists capturing the breathtaking scene of the hundreds of meters high “snow wall” cascading down.
According to a report by China Central Television (CCTV) on September 6th, several tourists recorded the avalanche with their mobile phones. A large amount of ice and snow cascaded from the mountaintop along the slope, forming a snow mist “snow wall” hundreds of meters wide and high, carrying ice and snow debris rushing towards the valley. The location of the avalanche is in a remote area, far from main transportation routes, and no casualties or property damage were reported.
On September 5th, the Akto County Cultural and Tourism Bureau issued a public notice warning tourists that the unopened high-risk control area of Muztagata Peak has complex terrain, unpredictable weather, significant safety hazards, weak communication signals, and extremely poor rescue conditions. It is strictly prohibited to enter the unopened high-risk control area without permission, and all risky activities such as sightseeing, hiking, exploration, crossing, and filming are prohibited.
Muztagata Peak, with its main peak reaching an altitude of 7,546 meters, has been covered in ice and glaciers for millions of years. Glacier No. 2 is part of the high-risk area that is not open to the public, with a higher risk of glacier activity.
