Typhoon “Baihaidong” (super typhoon level) made landfall along the coast of Kanmen Street, Yuhuan City, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province around 5:30 p.m. on August 9th. At the time of landfall, the maximum wind force near the center reached 14 on the Beaufort scale (42 meters per second), with the central minimum pressure at 945 hectopascals. The impact of the typhoon led to the cancellation of 1384 flights at Shanghai’s two major airports, suspension of several railway lines, complete cessation of long-distance bus services in Shanghai, and shutdown of multiple subway lines.
Amid the effects of the typhoon on August 9th, both Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports saw a significant disruption, canceling a total of 1384 flights – with 871 flights canceled at Pudong Airport and 513 at Hongqiao Airport, causing a reduction of nearly sixty percent in scheduled flights.
According to the “Air Travel Cross” app, the Shanghai Airlines flight FM7266, originally scheduled from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia to Shanghai Pudong Airport, circled over Anhui and Nanjing before diverting to Hefei Xinqiao International Airport. Shanghai Airlines’ customer service staff mentioned that the diversion was due to weather conditions, and the exact resumption time of flight FM7266 was still uncertain.
On the same day, Shanghai Long-Distance Bus Passenger Transport Center issued an emergency notice declaring a complete halt in long-distance bus services throughout Shanghai. The Shanghai Long-Distance Bus Passenger Transport Center was temporarily closed as a precaution.
Moreover, as per the WeChat account of “Railway Shanghai Station” on August 9th, following the suspension announced on August 7th, a temporary halt was planned for the Shanghai-Kunming High-Speed Railway, Hangzhou-Wenzhou High-Speed Railway, Hangzhou-Taipei High-Speed Railway (including Wen Yu section), Hangzhou-Quzhou High-Speed Railway, Jinan-Ji’nan High-Speed Railway, Hangzhou-Changzhou High-Speed Railway, Hangzhou-Shenzhen Railway, Jinan-Wenzhou Railway, Jinan-Taipei Railway, and other selected sections from August 9th to 10th. Additionally, the sections of Hejiu Railway, Tongjiu Railway, and Lutong Railway were to experience temporary suspension during specific time intervals from August 10th to 11th.
Meanwhile, as reported by “The Paper” news outlet, starting from 3:00 p.m. on August 9th, the entire Shanghai Metro Line 5, Line 16, and Pujiang Line were to be suspended. Line 3 had to operate at a reduced speed, whereas Line 1, Line 2, Line 4, Line 6, Line 7, Line 8, Line 9, Line 10, Line 11, Line 17, and the airport rail line’s surface and elevated segments were to implement speed restrictions.
