“Dune 2” is currently the highest-grossing in 2024, but the director is disappointed and hopes to be replaced.

📰 “Dune 2” remains the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far, disappoints director Denis Villeneuve

Local time on the 31st, Denis Villeneuve, the producer and director of the “Dune” film series, expressed his disappointment that “Dune 2” is still the highest-grossing film of 2024. He hopes that someone else will replace this success and stated, “I hope there will soon be other successful films at the box office.”

According to foreign media reports, on May 31st, Canadian film producer Denis Villeneuve stated in Toronto during the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards that he is disappointed that “Dune: Part Two” is still the top-grossing film of 2024. Villeneuve hopes to see more films screened in theaters and succeed, beyond just those directed by him.

As per Box Office Mojo data, “Dune 2” has grossed over $7.11 billion globally so far, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024. The second-ranked film is “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” with global box office revenue of $5.67 billion.

The 56-year-old Denis remarked, “I believe the films we need should be experienced in theaters and fully leverage the power of cinema. I’m not just talking about ‘Dune 2.’ Of course, I am referring to many films, like ‘Civil War,’ which is a strong example of fully utilizing the power of the cinema.”

Denis added, “I am fortunate that ‘Dune 2’ indeed met the audience’s demands. Frankly, I hope this situation occurs frequently. I am disappointed that ‘Dune 2’ is still in first place… I hope there will soon be other successful films at the box office, and I hope that the summer box office will eventually improve.”

According to the BBC, the summer box office has had a slow start in terms of revenue. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” topped the North American weekend box office after its Memorial Day weekend premiere, yet its four-day box office revenue was only $32 million, making it the worst Memorial Day week box office since 1995.

However, upcoming releases like “Despicable Me 4” and “Twisters” are expected to bring audiences back to theaters. Foreign media estimated that the most crucial films will be the only Marvel film of the year, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and these films are set to premiere in July.
