Politics in Spring: Why is Beijing Afraid of Banning the Film “Youth”?

Recently, the Chinese video sharing website “Bilibili” aired a series of three videos on its channel “Let’s Talk About Movies” on November 2, 11, and 29 this year, delving into a profound analysis of the movie “Youth”. These three videos quickly went viral and sparked heated discussions on social media platforms. With the total views surpassing 37 million, the three analysis videos were taken down by Bilibili on December 5 without any explanation.

“Youth” is a film directed by the renowned mainland Chinese director Feng Xiaogang, which premiered in December 2017. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by female writer Yan Ge Ling, the film tells the story of a group of young people in a military cultural troupe during the 1970s and 1980s, involving historical contexts such as the Cultural Revolution, the Sino-Vietnamese War in 1979, and the reform and opening up period. When “Youth” was released 8 years ago, it set a box office record of 1.422 billion RMB.
