8 dead and 13 injured in Brazilian hot air balloon crash

A tragic incident occurred in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil on Saturday, June 21st, as reported by firefighters. A hot air balloon caught fire and crashed, resulting in the death of 8 people and injuring 13 others.

Local news media G1 reported a video showing the hot air balloon crashing in the city of Praia Grande, with thick smoke billowing from the scene.

The military firefighters of Santa Catarina state stated that there were a total of 21 people aboard the hot air balloon, including the pilot, with 13 survivors who have been taken to hospitals for treatment.

Governor Jorginho Mello posted a video on social media expressing his condolences and stating, “We are immersed in sorrow. The tragedy has occurred. We will investigate the matter to understand how and why it happened. But for now, it is important for all departments to do their utmost, make every effort in rescue, assistance, transporting the injured to hospitals, and comforting the families.”

Mello mentioned that he has instructed state government agencies to assist in the rescue and investigation efforts in the city.

Praia Grande, located in the southern part of Brazil, is a popular destination for hot air balloons. Hot air ballooning is a popular activity during the June celebrations of Catholic saints such as St. John, with his feast day on June 24th.

According to G1, last Sunday, a hot air balloon crashed in the state of Sao Paulo, resulting in the death of a 27-year-old woman and injuring 11 others.
