In a tragic hit-and-run accident on Wednesday afternoon around 2 p.m. at Bath Beach in Brooklyn, a 76-year-old Chinese woman lost her life. The victim, Fangchong Chen, was crossing the street at the intersection of 86th Street and 18th Avenue when she was struck by a man riding an electric skateboard who ran a red light. The driver fled the scene, leaving Chen critically injured. Despite being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, she succumbed to her injuries. As of now, the police have not yet apprehended the rider involved in the incident, and the case remains under investigation.
After the accident, local State Senator Chen Xueli issued a strong condemnation, stating that he had been actively advocating for compliance with traffic rules among users of electric skateboards, light motorcycles, and bicycles in recent weeks. He had been working in collaboration with the local prosecutor’s office and the media to promote awareness of traffic safety. However, reckless behaviors like this one continue to occur frequently.
“Another elderly person has become a victim of a hit-and-run incident. This senseless and life-endangering behavior must be severely punished!” Chen Xueli emphasized. “We need to hold these irresponsible riders accountable under the law, strengthen penalties, strictly register all vehicles, and require licensing.”
He added that he would further discuss legislative measures with his colleagues to effectively regulate various modes of transportation, such as limiting the sale of electric bicycles with a maximum speed not exceeding 10 miles per hour.
“To address the madness that has been sweeping New York for the past few years, created by leftist forces, we have a lot of work ahead of us. New York has had enough of fires, casualties, sidewalk chaos, and ongoing unrest. This is America, not an unregulated third-world country,” he stressed.
