7 dead, 21 injured in a university stabbing incident in Wuxi

On the evening of November 16, 2024, a horrific indiscriminate stabbing incident occurred at Wuxi Institute of Technology and Technology in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, following the fatal accident caused by a 62-year-old man in Zhuhai earlier this week, which resulted in the death of 35 people and injuries to 43 others.

According to circulating online reports, around 7 p.m. on November 16, chat logs indicated that an individual armed with a knife was attacking people within the premises of the Wuxi Institute of Technology and Technology in Yixing, Jiangsu.

Reporters from the Extreme Eyes News learned from relevant authorities in Wuxi that emergency medical services received injured individuals from the Institute and have been taken to local hospitals for treatment. A hospital staff member confirmed that some students from the school were brought in for medical attention. An official from the Institute mentioned to reporters that they were not fully aware of the specific situation at the scene where the violence occurred.

Videos circulating online show multiple individuals lying on the ground, with one person heard saying, “My roommate was stabbed, that person stabs anyone they see. Don’t go out.”

Reports on the internet suggest that the assailant hid in bushes to carry out the stabbings, resulting in 7 fatalities and 21 injuries.

A purported “suicide note” left by the assailant, Xu Jiajin, on November 16, pointed to issues such as unpaid wages, lack of insurance, overtime pay denial, fines, and lack of compensation from the factory he worked at. The note expressed grievances about the grueling work conditions, alleging long shifts and no days off, including a reprimand for taking sick leave. Xu’s note also lamented the denial of his graduation certificate by the school, hoping that his death would advance labor laws and indicated a resolve to settle scores.

According to Da Wan News, around 8 p.m. on November 16, journalists contacted the nearby Yicheng Police Station where a duty officer stated, “We have dispatched personnel. Please trust the police. We are unable to disclose details according to work protocol.” When asked if the suspect had been apprehended, the officer reassured, “Rest assured.”

Earlier, it was learned that some of the wounded had been transferred from the Wuxi Institute of Technology and Technology to the new campus of Yixing People’s Hospital.
