Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Taiwan and its diplomatic ally Paraguay have established diplomatic relations for 68 years. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Wu, met with Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez to co-host a reception celebrating the 68th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties, showcasing the deep friendship between the two countries.
According to the press release from Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Joseph Wu arrived in Paraguay on the evening of July 10, local time. On the morning of the 11th, he met with Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez to review progress on key projects under the “Distinguished Nation Plan” in various fields such as trade and investment, infrastructure, smart healthcare, technology education, and intelligent transportation. These efforts aim to benefit the people and promote cooperation between Taiwan and Paraguay under the framework of Taiwan’s comprehensive diplomatic approach.
Following their meeting, Minister Wu and Foreign Minister Ramírez jointly held a press conference, emphasizing the shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and rule of law between Taiwan and Paraguay. They pledged to deepen exchanges and cooperation in various areas to enhance the well-being of their respective populations. Taiwan aims to transform from “diplomacy of values” to “value-added diplomacy,” showcasing the successful collaboration between Taiwan and Paraguay to the world.
In the evening of the same day, Minister Wu and Foreign Minister Ramírez co-hosted the “68th Anniversary of Taiwan-Paraguay Diplomatic Relations Celebration Reception.” The event was attended by over 250 guests including Paraguay’s Chief Justice César Diesel, Speaker of the House Raúl Latorre, members of the parliament, diplomatic corps, and representatives from the overseas community.
During his speech, Minister Wu praised the fruitful results of the longstanding cooperation between Taiwan and Paraguay. Projects such as the Taiwan-Paraguay Smart Technology Park, Taiwan-Paraguay University of Technology, Healthcare Information Management Efficiency Enhancement Project, and Electric Bus Pilot Project have begun to show significant progress. Taiwan is a crucial link in the global supply chain and is eager to further deepen cooperation with Paraguay in industries such as information and communication technology. This collaboration aims to drive the technological development in Paraguay and assist the country in achieving its national development goals.
In his address, Foreign Minister Ramírez expressed gratitude to Taiwan for its continuous support in promoting agricultural and livestock development, public health, medical care, innovative education, and infrastructure in Paraguay. Their cooperation has positively impacted rural communities, youth, and highlighted the importance of joint investments in knowledge and talent, exemplified by the construction of the Taiwan-Paraguay University of Technology. Both countries have integrated smart industries and global supply chain cooperation into their projects, paving the way for the future generations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan highlighted Paraguay as an important diplomatic ally and announced that both countries have agreed to waive visa requirements for ordinary passport holders starting from July 25. This move is expected to facilitate further people-to-people exchanges and simplify the process for Taiwanese companies to invest in Paraguay. The two nations will continue to deepen their diverse cooperation and inject new energy into their democratic partnership.
Minister Joseph Wu led a delegation of business representatives to Paraguay. In a Facebook post, he mentioned that this year marks the 68th anniversary of Taiwan-Paraguay diplomatic relations, and it is an important moment to elevate bilateral ties and look towards the future. He specially invited 31 business representatives from various fields in Taiwan to visit with the delegation, aiming to enhance closer economic cooperation and work together towards a vision of mutual prosperity.
