6 people dead in Yunnan’s Ning’er County as mudslides destroy nearly 2,000 homes

A mudslide disaster that occurred in a village in Ning’er County, Pu’er City, Yunnan Province has resulted in the death toll rising to 6 people. Nearly two thousand households in the entire county have had their homes damaged.

Affected by heavy rainfall, at around 5:40 am on August 20th, in Luanshitou Village, Tuanjie Village, Mohei Town, Ning’er County, Pu’er City, Yunnan Province, a sudden mudslide disaster struck, causing the destruction of houses, as well as damage to roads, electricity, and communication infrastructures.

According to official media reports on that day, the disaster led to 3 deaths and 1 missing person.

Jiupai News contacted Ms. Zhang, a villager from Enyong Village, De’an Township, Ning’er County. She mentioned that although she doesn’t live in the village, her mother, younger brother, sister-in-law, and their children reside there. Early on August 20th, at 6 am, she received a call informing her that the village had turned into an island, with some low-lying houses almost completely submerged, including two out of three floors of her own house. The villagers had scattered and sought shelter, mostly comprising elderly and children.

Ms. Zhang revealed that her mother and younger brother’s family sought refuge in a house on the hill behind, but the mountain was not safe, being affected by mudslides on both sides. The location where they sought shelter was right in the middle, and they also discovered what seemed to be a barrier lake forming on the mountain. The roads leading out were either washed away or blocked by landslides. Many people had dead phones, intermittent signals, and were almost cut off from the outside world.

On August 22nd, CCTV reported that according to the front command headquarters, the “8.20” flood and mudslide disaster in Ning’er County, Yunnan Province, had caused 6 deaths. Among them, in Mohei Town, 2 households with 5 people were buried, resulting in 4 deaths; in De’an Township, 1 household with 6 people was buried, leading to 2 deaths.

This disaster also resulted in 1195 households in the entire county having their houses damaged, with 450 needing reconstruction; the Yuenmo Expressway’s border section experienced interrupted two-way traffic in 7 disaster areas; the collapse of 26 sections along National Highway 213 from Qingshui River to Huangzhuang, with an estimated accumulation of about 18,500 cubic meters of soil and stones, caused a complete interruption of traffic in both directions; damage to Provincial Highway S221 and several county and township roads; and 5 power lines out of service.
