6.4 magnitude earthquake strikes Dapu, Chiayi County in Taiwan, alarms sounding

The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau announced that at 00:17 local time today (21st), an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale occurred, with a depth of 9.7 kilometers. The epicenter was 37.9 kilometers southeast of Chiayi County Government (in Dabu Township, Chiayi County), with the highest intensity reaching 6- on the seismic scale in Chiayi County.

This earthquake triggered a nationwide alert in all 20 counties and cities in Taiwan. The maximum seismic intensities recorded in various areas include 6- in Dabu Township, Chiayi County, 5- in Nanxi District, Tainan City, and Jiaxian District, Kaohsiung City. Chiayi City reported an intensity of 4, Tainan City and Kaohsiung City at level 3, and Taichung City at level 3. Hsinchu City, Taoyuan City, New Taipei City, and Taipei City were at level 2.

Following the earthquake, multiple aftershocks occurred in the Chiayi-Nan area.
