5 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Nan’ao, Yilan, Taiwan

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau reported that a Richter scale 5 earthquake occurred at 8:01 pm today (7th). The earthquake had a depth of 62.5 kilometers, with the epicenter located 19.2 kilometers south of the Yilan County government (in Nan’ao Township, Yilan County).

The highest seismic intensity recorded in various parts of Taiwan were as follows: Yilan County and Hsinchu County at level 3, Hualien County, Taoyuan City, New Taipei City, Taipei City, Nantou County, Taichung City, Hsinchu City, Miaoli County, and Changhua County at level 2. Keelung City, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, and Chiayi City experienced a seismic intensity of level 1.

This earthquake caused mild to moderate shaking in different regions of Taiwan, prompting local residents to be on alert and observe any potential damage. The earthquake’s depth and distance from populated areas may have contributed to the varying intensities experienced across the island.
