Early in the morning of June 1st, a shallow 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Nimah County in Nagqu City, Tibet.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake occurred at 8:46am local time with its epicenter located at 34.14 degrees north latitude and 86.36 degrees east longitude, and a depth of 8 kilometers.
The official Weibo account of the China Earthquake Networks Center reported that there were no villages within 20 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter, and no towns within 100 kilometers.
The epicenter was 253 kilometers from Shuanghu County, 275 kilometers from Nimah County, 296 kilometers from Gaize County, 593 kilometers from Shigatse City, and 672 kilometers from Lhasa City. The average altitude within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter is approximately 5209 meters.
Netizens expressed their concerns and well wishes, with comments such as “Wishing for everyone’s safety,” “Thank goodness it’s in an uninhabited area,” “I was shaken awake,” “Oh no, another earthquake,” and “There have been so many geological disasters in recent years, let’s pray for safety.”
Earlier on May 27th, Angren County in Shigatse City, Tibet experienced a 3.8-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Moreover, following a 5.0-magnitude earthquake in Muli County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan, there have been several subsequent earthquakes in the area.
On May 27th, Muli County was hit by a 5.0-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 8 kilometers, causing tremors in Xichang, Panzhihua, and other areas. On the same day, there were five more earthquakes in Muli County, ranging from 3.0 to 4.5 in magnitude. Later on May 30th and 31st, earthquakes of 3.0 and 3.7 magnitudes struck the region. All these earthquakes were shallow, with depths ranging from 8 to 14 kilometers.
After the 5.0-magnitude earthquake in Liangshan, there were reports of massive falling rocks in Shuiluo Town, with dust flying everywhere. Local residents described feeling the earthquake very clearly, with houses shaking and some hills collapsing. They knew it was an earthquake and quickly evacuated to open areas.
