Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported that a 5.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the offshore waters of the Nemuro Peninsula in Hokkaido, Japan at 6:23 am local time on Sunday, June 22.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) stated that a 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit the waters near Hokkaido, Japan.
According to GFZ, the earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 6.1 for the earthquake, with the same depth as GFZ’s report.
Hokkaido is no stranger to earthquakes, with a 5.6 magnitude quake occurring off the southern coast on May 23. Just over a week later, on May 31, another earthquake of 6.1 magnitude struck the waters near Hokkaido.
The frequent seismic activity in the region serves as a reminder of the tectonic forces at play in Japan, where earthquakes are a common occurrence. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
